Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education was come into existence in 1910 under the regulation of Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education evaluate their students on the basis of their progress by conducting two board examinations- one at the end of 10^th standard examination and the other one at the end of higher secondary examination. The marks obtained in higher secondary examination used by the universities to recognize the eligibility and cut-off for admission in graduation courses.

The streams that are offered up to and ending at the 10^th standard level are- Secondary School Leaving Certificate stream (SSLC), The Anglo-Indian stream, The Oriental School Leaving Certificate (OSLC) and Matriculation stream. On the other hand, for higher secondary level examinations there is one unified stream leading to the award of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
